Road Atlanta is a multi-purpose road course an hour's drive away from Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia. It is a high-speed circuit, and its construction work took less than six months in 1969 when a Cam-Am series race needed to relocate due to a tragic flood affecting another raceway. It has a simple layout with 12 turns, a total length of 2.54 miles, and a vertical gain of 79 ft. This elevation change is noticeable on turn 12, a downhill segment coming right before the final stretch, where drivers need to press the gas pedal to seal their victory lap. Another trademark part of Road Atlanta is the fast right-left-right-left turn combo known as the esses, requiring drivers' top maneuvering for avoiding the curbs.
Road Atlanta is home to The Petit Le Mans, an annual IMSA endurance race following a similar format to one of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a 10-hour limit instead of the 24 hours of the original competition. Several other racing competitions such as IndyCar, NASCAR, Can-Am, or AMA Superbike Championship have also taken place in this road course. Heavy rainfall is a concern on the Peach State, particularly in June, and several races tended to get quite dangerous for that reason over the years.
